The Piper Professor Award is conferred by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation of San Antonio, Texas.
The Piper Professor Award is intended to recognize outstanding achievement in teaching at Texas colleges and universities. The selection committee looks for “the well-rounded, outgoing teacher, devoted to the profession, who has made a special impact on students and the community.”
Each year, the Faculty Senate announces the award and accepts nominations for outstanding faculty members.
State wide, ten awards of $5,000 each are made annually to professors for superior teaching at the college level. Selection is made from nominations submitted by each college or university in the State of Texas.
A list of Texas State University Piper Professors and examples of successful nomination forms are posted on the Faculty Senate website.
When Texas State is notified that one of its faculty has been selected as a Piper Professor, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs shall plan and coordinate the reception around the schedules of the recipient, the President, and the Provost. The President, or president’s representative, will make the presentation at the ceremony. The reception is funded from a central account.
All Deans, Chairs/Directors, President Cabinet, faculty and retired faculty shall be invited to the reception.
Former Texas State Piper Professors shall be invited to the reception and shall be introduced as special guests at the reception, if possible.
The Provost will initiate a letter of congratulations from the President to the recipient.
The Provost will request that University News Services issue a news release that will coincide with the general announcement of the selection and/or invitation to the reception.
Further information regarding the nomination/application process is available on the Faculty Senate website.
